Five million people in a desert that runs 110°F for a hundred days a year, and the asphalt does not let go of it at night — Phoenix has warmed faster than any large city in America. The monsoon arrives in July with dust walls off the Pinal County farmland and microbursts that flatten power poles, and then it is dry again until winter.

Tucson sits two thousand feet higher than Phoenix and gets nearly twice the monsoon rain, and the sky islands above it stack a Canadian forest on top of a Sonoran desert in twenty-seven miles — Mount Lemmon can be snowed in while the valley floor is at 80°F. The summer storms come up off the Sierra Madre and they arrive on schedule.

Flagstaff sits at 7,000 feet and averages a hundred inches of snow — more than Denver, Buffalo or Chicago — while Phoenix, ninety minutes down I-17, has never seen an inch stick. The Plateau runs from the Grand Canyon across the Navajo Nation to the New Mexico line, and it is the one part of Arizona that keeps daylight saving time.
